Using Video in the Classroom
Based on your experience, class discussion, and reading from selected websites, tell why video can be an effective way to increase student learning. What are drawbacks to using videos? What are some ways that people use videos and movies ineffectively? What are pros and cons of student-made/teacher-made movies? Please post a response by 11:59 PM 3/15/09.

Videos can be an effective way to increase student learning. Videos are something fun and different that can be added into the curriculum to increase learning. Teachers who use instructional video report that their students retain more information and are more enthusiastic about what they are learning. Students learn more effectively when they are having fun.
There are a few drawbacks to using video in the classroom; however, I believe that the positive far outshines the negative. If teachers use video and movies effectively these drawbacks could be virtually eliminated. Teachers can use videos ineffectively. Some teachers may just pop in a video and expect students to learn all the concepts just from watching. This leads me to one drawback which is passivity. Students are accustomed to sitting at home and watching TV passively. Obviously, students aren't really learning when they aren't engaged in the video. Some learners switch off when a teacher pops in a video. Also, parents may have complaints when they hear that their children have been watching videos during class.
However, videos can be a wonderful tool. Videos make things that use to be impossible, possible. For example, a teacher could never take his or her students on a field trip through the human body, but they can with a video. Teachers also have the opportunity to show experiments that can't be done in class, and reach students with varying learning styles.
Producing a video is an excellent way for students to express themselves. It can be as effective as a written paper, but tons more fun. Such projects are creative, technical, and can be an excellent way to incorporate collaborative learning. When students produce a video, they have something that showcases their work and research.
Video can be used as an effective way to increase learning because it gives the students a way to visually see what is being explained rather than having to picture it in their heads. By bring life to the lesson, student are then engaged and are able to apply lessons that may have originally been less interesting to them. If video is implemented correctly and positively, students will benefit because it can create clarity within the subject being addressed. It is important to keep students engaged while watching the video. One possibility for this could be to have them take notes for discussion after the video or to follow along with a guide to be filled in while watching the video. A drawback is the fact that it is easy to "zone out" during video presentations. If the room gets dark and somewhat quiet, it is easy for students to become otherwise occupied or even fall asleep. Another drawback is that as with all instruction, some students could find it easy to to watch the video, but could not translate it into information learned. Videos and movies are used ineffectively within the classroom by not introducing the information efficiently before presenting the video. Other ways include using the video as instruction rather than enhancement or as a time filler rather than in addition to other activities. Some of the pros of student and teacher made movies are that the information being presented is beneficial to the instruction of the students, it provides additional understanding for the students, and it allows the teacher to monitor student involvement to enhance their own learning. Some of the cons of student and teacher made movies are that they can be time consuming during imperative instructional time, the teacher cannot monitor everything the students put into the videos because some of them may be worked on or completed at home, and while they may seem beneficial, they may cause additional confusion.
Videos can be effective in students learning material because it is something different then listening to a lecture and taking notes. But, teachers have to be careful not to depend on videos teaching the students because after awhile the videos can also become boring.
A drawback to using videos is that some of the content of the video could be skewed to fit the view of the producer, director etc... and not give accurate information about the subject(especially History). One subject that videos could be helpful would be Geography because of the different countries and cultures is sometimes learned better through videos.
Teacher made movies:
Pro - the students would appreciate the fact that the teacher took the time to make this video for them to enhance their understanding of the subject.
Con - the teacher's video was awful and not coherent so that the students could follow the subject matter.
Student made movies:
Pro - enhances their technology skills along with increasing their knowledge on the subject.
Con- video was not well made
Using a video in the classroom can be very helpful in visualizing the subject. Should be used in addition to lecture and discussion to solidify information.
I believe videos are an effective way to increase student learning because it isn't the typical read out of the book type of showing information. I believe students are always ready to experience new ways to learn different things. Also, this can help students who are visual learners or audio learners. The videos would have pictures or video clips, as well as having someone talk to them (and it wouldn't be considered a lecture in their minds).
However, are there drawbacks to using the video in the classroom. I believe that many times students see a teacher use a video, they don't listen. They typically go to sleep or don't pay attention. I believe rare use of a SHORT video is probably the best for student knowledge.
There are some ineffective ways teachers use videos. I believe if you used them too much or the video is too long students will lose interest in the videos. Also, I believe there needs to be something to get the students excited about a video. Younger students, I don't see that as a problem. 6-12 students I see as getting bored watching videos over and over. There needs to be a catch to make it exciting for them.
I believe there are more pros than cons-only if you use the videos effectively. Some of the pros: it is a different teaching style, a teacher can show experiments that can't be done in the classroom, students can make their own! The cons of the teacher videos: it could be boring, use of too many, too long, no requirements for watching the video.
I believe using student made videos are one of the most effective use for the videos. Students will learn so much by making their own instead of sitting at watching. Also, watching their peers videos would be a great way! Most students will go all out on a project that is fun and they will get to see their results. Also, if the teacher shows the videos to the entire class-say each group gets a different topic-many students will want to do their best and they will also learn how to make a video as well as their subject matter!
Videos are great for auditory and visual learners. Enjoyable videos engage students and enhance student learning. Once students are engaged in the video, they become emotionally involved. Video is most effective when used to enhance student learning. Pros of student-made videos are that students have to research the concept, brainstorm, plan, sort, edit, and collect data. These activities are all active learning processes. Cons to student-made videos are that they require lots of class time and good teacher-made videos could also require too much time. Pros of teacher-made videos are that teachers can share their own videos and can include exactly what they want to include in the videos. Ineffective videos are videos that are too long. Videos can become ineffective when proper previewing and reviewing activities are missing, there are no learning objectives, and by turning the classroom lights out. By the lights being out, the students’ learning becomes passive and not active. Overall, I think short videos used to increase student learning and supplement lessons are effective.
Videos can be an effective way of learning because they get to have hands-on experiece by making a movie themselves and being proud of the work that they have done and the time that they put into it. When students have hands-on experience then sometimes it is easier for them to learn better. Some drawbacks that videos can bring is students not having all the correct information or not havig enough information if they are the ones making the movie. I also can see a problem when showing a movie in class, some student become inattentive and do not learn or know what the movie is talking about. Movies and videos can be used ineffectively by the teacher using the video to teach for her/him and not expanding on what the video showed. If teachers do this and expect their students to know it for a test or project, then some students are not able to learn this way. Pros of teacher made maovies can be that the teacher gets the subjects lessons in the movie that they would like and can use different things to get the point across. Cons can include that they use a movie instead of teaching a lesson or doing an activity with the students. Student made movies can be fun for the students to get the hand-on experience, but can create the problem of not getting the best information in the movie that is needed Although there can be some problems with videos in the classroom, they do have some benefits and can be very helpful.
Movies can be effective and ineffective in a student's learning methods. One way that a movie can be effective is that students will more than likely get drawn into a movie and possibly absorb more information than what a regular lecture may provide.A child will readily accept a lesson from a movie.
An ineffective action that movies can provide (and I know this from experience! I was there once!), is talking may occur during the film. If the students are talking, this can cause a distraction to learning what the movie is discussing. It can also distract other students'(who are trying to pay attention to the movie)learning.
Back to a pro for a video, you can find a video on ANYTHING! So, a lesson using a movie in any subject area can be accomplished.
Students and teachers producing a movie is also yet another learning experience. Rather than just watching a film, it would be neat to learn how one is made. Perhaps broadcasting a small news show across the school would be a good way to keep in touch with current events and technology!
I believe that videos can definitely be an effective learning tool because the students are actually seeing it and not just hearing it. Sometimes it is easier to understand things when they are seen and not simply heard. Also, if a topic is being lectured on, it is a good reinforcer to show a video on the topic as well. A child is more likely to remember something they saw rather than what they heard. Videos are a good way to mix things up in the classroom. If a class has a set routine everyday it can become a bore, for everyone. It is always a good idea to change up how materials are being taught.
I think that students would definitely love making their own movies! What kid wouldn’t? Not only would they be learning about technology, but also they would be enhancing their knowledge on a particular subject while having fun at the same time! The same goes for if the teacher made the movie. I think the kids would be more interested in seeing what their teacher came up with, rather than a stranger. Also, the teacher could incorporate photos of the students into the movie or other things to make it more personal.
I have found that videos in the classroom can increse the students abaility to remember information longer, since they had a visual to go along with the subject matter being taught. Also using video can make the students attention spand last longer in proper lighting. As I recall when teachers would show videos with the lights off the students brains went off as well.
When teachers use videos they have created it allows the teacher to show excactly what material they want to class to know and can keep the minor important material less shown. I think videos that are shown in addition to the lesson get less attention from the students because they have already heard a lecture over the same thing.
When students make videos it allows them to show their creativity and increases their intrest but it also gives them no boundries on what they add to the video. I think the pros outweigh the cons and videos are a great contribution to the classroom.
Video can be an effective approach in the learning process for students. Videos give other perspectives of situations and usually are made with special emphasis on a particular topic. This can give students special in depth information about that topic. One major drawback to using videos is that they are usually made with special interest and present only their main opinion on the situation. This can be good and bad depending on the severity of their opinion. People can use videos as “fillers” for classroom settings. In a way this could be effective because you don’t have any dead time and the video could be very informative. On the other hand it could just take up class time and not be using the time wisely. It could be a very informative video that really does not relate at all, which would be very ineffective. Videos that are made by students can be good if the student does it right. The video makes them show/see what the topic is really about. Or they are forced to actually know how it works to be able to video tape it. The downside of student made videos is that usually students turn them into jokes and do not get the full potential out of the project. Teacher-made videos can have a great effect if they are made available to the students. These videos can be of the classroom or teacher specifically explaining something. The advantage to having these videos available to the students is that outside the classroom when they need help they can go back and watch these videos. The disadvantages of teacher-made movies is when they are not available to the students and only for in class use. This is where the teacher would present it, but not make it available for later use.
Videos can be a great thing to use in the classroom if used correctly. Some videos can clear up issues that are very confusing to kids when described in text or picture format. Videos can also take students to other countries they may never get to visit and show them different cultures. Some drawbacks to using videos are that some students may not pay attention just as with other teaching methods. Some videos can also contain alot of filler when you really only need to watch a portion of it. Some people use videos and movies ineffectively when they use them simply out of laziness. I have seen this many times when I was a student. The teacher would just put in a full video, and that's all we did for class. Videos are also ineffective if they are not discussed before and after. The teacher should take the time to introduce what they will be seeing and them let them have time to discuss it and ask questions afterward. Some of the pros of student & teacher made movies are that you only get the information you need. For student made movies, the students get experience with technology and get group work skills. Some of the cons would be that it could be very time consuming, and your school may not have all the resources.
Videos can be an affective tool in the education of students. We have seen several articles going over the benefits of videos in stimulating the senses to help knowledge retention. With this new interface we can cover material faster and in a variety of ways. We can all honestly say that the history channel overall makes history much more interesting than a monotone professor. This will open up new markets in the creation and sell of educational videos and we are starting now to see that happen. As with all things there are a few minor drawbacks. The material content is one that needs to be considered. In all honesty it is less the material itself but rather the way it is delivered. This will honestly be a case of taking away whatever emotions were stressed at the time. You can imagine the very extravagant example of having someone laughing in a video about the Holocaust. That may sound sinister but it is the truth. Student and teacher made videos present new problems. They can include the previous drawback, but will also contain many more. With amateur cinematography you will run into issues with quality. Overall the benefits outweigh the cost and video is seeing its way into the classroom forever.
Videos enhance student learning. It is not the same old boring lecture that some teachers get stuck in. Videos can motivate and engage learners. One advantage of videos would be that there are a ton of options. No matter what the topic, chances are you will be able to find a video to go along with it. They are also easy to show. It doesnt take long to find an effective video to go along with the lesson you are teaching. One drawback would be that you cant only show a video and expect the students to know everything. Yes, the students will learn from the video but it should not be the only way of getting information. Allowing students/ teachers to make their own movies also motivate the students. They are more likely to get involved and take part if they get to make their own video. Using videos is just like everything else. It has its positives as well as its negatives. Howwever, I think that when used correctly it has many benefits.
Using videos in the classroom can give students a different way to learn. You can allow students to do their own research for their videos, have them use the information they have already learned in class, or a combination of both. Since they are applying what they have learned to something different and creative of their own, the students are more apt to remember and recall the lesson materials later on down teh road when they are needed or tested. Those who use videos say students are more interested in learning and are excited to participate in classroom activities. Some drawbacks to using videos would be what is or isnt technologically wise at schools and also teaching all of the students how to use what they need to use in order to make their videos. I think that sometimes teachers use videos as something to fill time with which can be problematic in the classroom. Making videos helps students remember what the lesson at hand is. A con for making the video would be how much time it can take and not keeping students focused.
